Hatfield House Chamber Music Festival 2023

This year’s Hatfield House Chamber Music Festival, which celebrated the theme of ‘A Family Affair’, has received rave reviews for performances by ensembles such as Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective, Orsino Wind, Ensemble Pro Victoria and viol consort Arculo. Festival Artistic Director, cellist Guy Johnston had a busy performing schedule during the festival and garnered wonderful reviews for his performances with Huw Watkins and Ruby Hughes, and with his brother, violinist Magnus Johnston and pianist Tom Poster.

“Everything about the opening movement was fluid and organic, Johnston’s expressive lines tenderly coaxed, all the small sighs and ‘double takes’ subtly but vividly rendered, with a lovely golden tone. Watkins supported the cello’s freedom – Johnston’s bowing was brilliantly relaxed and silky – and the pair’s well-judged rubatos and insightful response to the harmonic twists and turns were compelling.” Opera Today  – read the full review.

“For the Duett, violin and cello were definitely to the fore, Guy Johnston’s richly expressive cello contrasting nicely with his brother Magnus’ elegant, fine-grained violin playing.” Planet Hugill – read the full review.
