The Gramophone Awards were announced last night – Congratulations to Peter Donohoe who won in the Orchestral category.
The album ‘Bacewicz Orchestral Works Vol. 2’ recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo was given the Orchestral Award at the ceremony last night. The album includes Bacewicz’s Piano Concerto, with Peter Donohoe as piano soloist.
“it’s evident that in Oramo and the BBC SO we have a conductor and orchestra who are entirely inside this music. And who better to champion the Piano Concerto than Peter Donohoe (it needs mentioning even though this is the Orchestral category), a keyboard lion of the old school who takes a very audible relish in exploring unfamiliar repertoire, and performing it with the same bravura that he brings to Rachmaninov or Beethoven?
Together, these musicians have the measure of Bacewicz’s language: that life-affirming, utterly idiosyncratic fusion of passion and rigour; of rhythmic drive and dancing, glistening humour.”
