Biography —

Wigmore Soloists is a new chamber ensemble comprising a roster of outstanding musicians, led by artistic director Michael Collins and created with Wigmore Hall’s Director, John Gilhooly.

This new and innovative ensemble performs repertoire both old and new, and commissions leading composers to expand upon the extensive catalogue of chamber music works. With a large core line up of string quintet, wind quintet and piano, the group performs a wide and varied repertoire and is dedicated to revitalising great works at the highest level.

Taking the name of one of the world’s most iconic concert halls (the first time an ensemble has been given this honour), the group gives regular concerts at Wigmore Hall and in other major venues around the world. The ensemble has recorded six discs with BIS Records which have received high critical acclaim from Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine, The Strad, and a Diapson d’Or Award for their 2023 recordings of the Berwald and Beethoven Septets. Winter 2026 will showcase their upcoming release of Brahms’ chamber works with BIS Records.

Since the ensemble’s formation in 2021, the Wigmore Soloists have seen performances at the Het Concertgebouw, National Concert Hall Dublin, Yamaha Hall Tokyo, Sociedad Filarmónica de Bilbao, and CSO ADA Concert Hall alongside their ongoing series at Wigmore Hall. The 25/26 season features a Southern Europe tour and the group’s premiere performance at Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín.

Reviews —

Alberto Menéndez Escribano’s mellow horn and Olivier Stankiewicz’s plangent oboe subtly interwoven with Robin O’Neill’s impish bassoon and Michael Collins’s velvety clarinet combined to pierce the work’s most tender heart. With scarcely a pause for breath the five embarked on the final Rondo, a joyful, good humoured musical exchange played with vivacity, sensitivity and intelligence.

Seen and Hear International

The sense of ensemble playing was strong... The re-imagination of the wind parts and their role brought new opportunities to the internal balance of the work.

Bachtrack

This was a delightful performance... with clarinettist Michael Collins graceful in the opening melody, and cellist Kristina Blaumane elegant when her turn came.

BBC Music Magazine

Phrasing of the lyrical melodies is invariably graceful... dispatched with scintillating virtuosity and an infectious sense of fun. If the finale doesn't make you smile, you probably haven't been listening.

Ferguson, Bliss & Holloway: Octets & Clarinet Quintet

With violinist Isabelle van Keulen and clarinettist Michael Collins spearheading the players, it ’s unsurprising that the performance [of the Ferguson Octet] as a whole is something of a revelation.

Wigmore Soloists: Septets

Berwald could hardly have more persuasive advocates than the Wigmore Soloists, a starry line-up led with mingled finesse and ebullience by violinist Isabelle van Keulen and clarinettist Michael Collins.

Wigmore Soloists: Clarinet Trios

Michael Collins’s tone flows like oil, as Mozart himself might have said...The sequence of works is delectable and the performances delivered with all the care and sensitivity you could wish for.
